October 97

Oh this flashbulb world - such an unavoidable loss of information through simplification - not to mention the abyss between experience and description nevertheless here's some Fall caper adjective jerking from the word gO. Spent the first weekend of October in Algonquin park with Alan - the finest tree in the whole forest, for that's when the scenery is most SPECTACULAR. Gawking at leaves, shangri-la-di-da mother nature bowled me over. Speaking of trees, broke Yom Kippur @ Lynn Morris' place she's a designer at ROOTS. Celebrated birthdays with Jet, Risa, Liz G and Zanesha Gowrali who designs for Quincy Jones' show VIBE. Yvonne and Bill the ideaguy celebrated their decade of togetherness since the NOW mag personal "wanted…..who does not want to get fucked on the first date…"@ El Convento Rico. I cannot be more generous in my praise of this quintessentially, likable, couple. Hot Hot Hot! opening of Carlos' Pepper the new Pepperteria on Augusta with Johnny followed by Leon's "Hot Rio Lounge"

Heard of any good restaurants lately? Party food of the month goes to the Beat Toronto book launch @ D/X where a good knife and fork were played. Spotlights 50 of this Cosmopolitan Metropolis that we still call Toronto's most interesting restaurants. Speaking of which, went to André from the Rivoli's new one Lava Bar and Restaurant for Judy Faules of muchmusic's moving to Vancouver party with City TV's Larissa Gulka. Absolutely Ice-box - (totally -cool) gO-friends there were supacats Sabrina, Simmy, and Sara. Hang'n with Julia @ Antonella's art opening beforehand.

Sneak preview of "Tipsy" with my gO-boy Ally (fresh from C|Nets' new web developer conference in New Orleans) weekly Thursday cocktail lounge cabaret @ The Silver Dollar Room which really set the mood for the timetrip to DJ Sir Spinner Fine Vinyl's cocktail fantasy land. Dress Code: Think Las Vegas. Danced more there than at The Good Taste Launch @ Churchill's Cigar Bar. The Cocktail party celebrated the release of IDG Books new Entertainment Series Titles i.e. Jaymz Bee's Cocktail Parties For Dummies, Ray Foley's "Bartending For Dummies". Dress Code: Sleazure Suits, Austin Power suit, KGB agent/Bond girl. "Cocktails flowed like Monsoon rainwater" but I don't drink alcohol or smoke tobacco. Fiesta Bohemia's slammin' opening party @ Satelite Lounge. Manbo Urbana Orchestra played while Andy Roberts spun tribal house (my fave) Everyone from Vincent John Vincent to the already regulars from resident DJ Alvero C's ex-Octopus Wednesdays, showed up to dance, socialize, and connive a good time. Canada Legalized Laughter and gOgO begOnia from patagOnia was in the green room garage party for their shameless Launch-a-thon. (1st national b-cast) T-800 days and counting! The millennia countdown continues. The party took place @ the fabulously edible, organic, "Sustenance". Say it in your dirtiest voice: GO AHEAD MAKE MY MILLENIUM! Major-high-caliber-bummer @ Entertainment Network's ELECTRONIC rave. Our non-bluescreen video set-up didn't provide feedback as interesting as we hoped. Just being digital is not enough- it's all in the lighting. JoE.P., J9, and S.O. S. have been held in my highest reverence since I went to their first party in /95. For the past 5 years I've been working @ Vivid Group, makers of the Patented Mandala Virtual Reality System. We'll be at another E-network rave soon with a definite difference. MISSTRESS BARBARA delivered the E!lectricity. It was a night of rhapsodizing, dancing, and partaking. The Bank of Symbiosis' closing night performance extravaganza - this site-specific exhibition/art occupation was held in a former bank. Brechtian surf lounge music for frustrated bank employees and Sominex City for me. Gu Xiong's performance was ultra-zloovy and his exhibition which includes 10 original silkscreen prints by Andy Warhol (on loan) is still on at A space till Dec/6. Went to General Idea's "The Search for the Spirit" opening @ the AGO, which had interesting peeps unlike the AGO "artist" opening for Keith Haring's show the cesspool of conservatism. The rigid formality of the John suit MBA's practically suffocated me. When my pal Duncan Buchanan started break dancing in "The Search for the Spirit" of Keith, he burst every balloon of propriety quite a few eyebrows were raised (none of them pierced). "…getting art off the pedestals and giving it back to the people." -Keith Haring Streetsmarts- Don't miss this show on till Jan/18/98. It's the most comprehensive retrospective yet in N America it's truly a window into the (pop) cultural sensibilities of the /80's including an ambient music environment. It only stood to reason that my next art stop was @ 52 Inc. for Fiona Smyth the meteorologist of hipcomics's opening. Works in REASON were previously shown at CBGB gallery in NYC. Spent Halloween with my bike gang crew. Jennifer Morton just back from Beirut airs Nov 21 "The New Music" organizes them. We met @ Bar Code /Ted's Wreckin Yard upstairs dead animal menu - weekend brunch at a decent hour. Rainin chats and chiens we bicycled around trying to catch up to Critical Mass and the Alley Cat Scramble @ Jet Fuel. Be afraid be very very afraid Halloween parties: Neray MarCom's, met Jamie Reid (Interlog), Digital Renaissance's (Infra Dig office space), and the wonderful Mary Margaret O'Hara's house party.

That's about the size of it. Ne plus ultra
